The heatwave created serious problems

The recent heat wave has created problems, among other things, at the fish farm in Tännäs, where a new generation of Grundsjörödingen has hatched. It is above all the fry of the year that have been exposed to stress as the water in the facility has become significantly warmer than normal. The warmer water has a lower oxygen content and affects the fish 'breathing'. Too high temperatures around 20 degrees or more means the risk of the fry being suffocated and leads to stress which in turn causes them to stop eating and the risks of parasites increase despite measures. It was the vicious spiral that meant high mortality and during the night until Tuesday meant rapid release of the surviving fry in Grundsjön.

During the last weekend, Långåfisket started its freezer container and started making ice blocks that managed to lower the temperature in the cultivation basins a few degrees. Unfortunately, it turned out that the development has gone so far that the Costia parasite has developed and it is a deadly threat to the small fry, which had also lost much of its resilience.

After consultation with the County Administrative Board on Monday evening, it was decided to release the remaining fry immediately in Grundsjön shortly after midnight.. The transport could be carried out without any problems as Långåfisket's emergency preparedness organization has been in operation since last Friday.

It is still too early to determine how many fry have been lost by the approx 40 000 which were in the pools, but a first assessment points to about three quarters.

– It is discussed whether the extreme heat waves are part of climate change. Our conclusion is that they have a connection, at least as they can be interpreted in the time where the warming of the Swedish mountain range is faster than in other parts of the country. For the cold water-dependent noble fishermen in Långå, there are significant threats and for Grundsjörödingen there are also problems from power extraction.. That is why Fortum Sverige AB, County Administrative Board of Jämtland, Härjedalen, Särvsjön's village community and Långå fisheries conservation association work together to save Grundsjörödingen. This is done in part through reduction fishing for whitefish and support release of farmed char with rum taken locally. The fry in Tännäs fish farm belong in that picture, says Helge Jonsson, who is chairman of the board both for Långåfisket and in the Grundsjö project.

Helge Jonsson also believes that it is time for institutions, public bodies and policies to update the ambitions for safer supply of juvenile fish. Climate change requires new and greater measures. Responsibility should be seen as part of society's infrastructure, he says.
